The Backup area allows you to download the daily, weekly, or monthly backup file of your entire web site, or a particular MySQL, alias, or filter backup file. If your computer crashes, or your personal backups are destroyed, these files allow you to recover your site in a convenient manner (you could also use FTP to download each file, but it would take much longer as the files are not compressed).

CJ Website Hosting uses Spam Assassin to filter emails. Spam Assasin is installed on a mail server and used to identify spam. It checks for spam using a large number of pre-set rules that check the header, body, and sender of all e-mail messages sent to your domain mailbox.

Apache is the most popular program used for serving web pages. Learn more about Apache at http://www.apache.org.

Apache handlers tell the server how to deal with web files that need to be processed on the server. For example, Apache is set up to process files with .php extensions using PHP. However, if for some reason you also wanted to process files with .phtml extension using PHP, then you would have to set up a custom Apache handler for your site. Note: People often get confused as to the difference between MIME types and Apache handlers. Basically, MIME types tell your browser how to handle files, while Apache handlers tell the server how to handle files.

ASP is an acronym for Active Server Pages. ASP is a method of dynamically creating web pages. ASP was developed by Microsoft and is similar to Visual Basic. CJ Website Hosting does not currently support ASP, instead we support a similar language, PHP.

Autoresponders are e-mail messages that are sent automatically when an e-mail arrives for a specific e-mail account. Autoresponders are most commonly used for an "Out of Office" style message to inform your correspondents that you are not available, without you having to reply manually. You can have more than one autoresponder on one account. You can use plain text or include HTML code in the autoresponder, and choose from a wide variety of character sets

Technically, bandwidth refers to the speed of data transmission (measured in bits/kilobits per second - bps/kbps) but when using the term relating to web hosting, it is the amount of data transmitted (measured in megabytes or gigabytes). CJ Website Hosting offer high bandwidth because we have keep our server load down. Beware of companies that offer unlimited bandwidth or hits - the reality is that bandwidth is not free, companies that have unlimited offers are betting that you will not use much bandwidth. They usually have fine print that allows them to cancel your account at anytime and/or charge you for excessive bandwidth (usually at extortionate costs!)

CGI stands for Common Gateway Interface. CGI is not a programming language, it defines how data is passed between software and databases to the web page. CGI programs can be written using a variety of languages, such as Perl, C, PHP and others.

This CGI Center area allows you to use some pre-installed CGI scripts through CPanel. This section contains information about using these scripts, as well as using CGI scripts in general.

The directory where executable files are located. Every customer will have their own CGI-BIN directory.

A control panel allows you to manage aspects of you web site or domain. For example, you are able to use the CJ Website Hosting control panel to setup email forwarding options, create FTP accounts, change contact information, view your statistics, change your password and more.

A simple counting script that displays the number of times a particular web page has been accessed. By putting a counter on your home page, you can keep track of how many visitors have looked at your web site since the counter was created. This is useful not only for your own information, but as a means of showing visitors how popular your site is.

Error pages are displayed to Internet users when any one of a variety of errors occur, such as when a user enters an incorrect URL or is not authorized to access a specific directory in your web site. Companies often customise error pages to brand them with a specific corporate image and a link to their home page. You do not have to customise these pages - the error page is always available, whether customised or not.

The amount of our hard drive resources that you are entitled to use. All files, databases, and email occupy disk space. CJ Website Hosting offers large amounts of Disk Space to customers so that you will never run out. A small website for example, containing around 10 pages, would only consume a few megabytes of disk space. Our lowest package offers a massive 200MB's - giving you loads of space to store your files and emails; so there is no chance you could reach your limit.

DNS is an acronmyn for domain name system. DNS servers translate the easy to remember 'domain names' like cj-hosting.com into their true IP address such as 68.188.0.1. If the IP address could not be found during a DNS lookup an error is returned in your browser.

Domain names are unique like a telephone number is. They are used as easy to remember names that help people find your website. CJ Website Hosting offers a domain lookup tool (at the top of every page) to allow you to check and go on to register your chosen domain.

When you get a new domain name, you may not have completed your web site yet. You need to have a place to park your domain name under name servers until you are ready to build your web site. CJ Website Hosting will park your domain for free as well as give you free email forwarding and free domain redirection until you ready to upgrade to a web hosting solution.

Email, or e-mail is the transmission of messages and optional file attachments over a network.

Within an enterprise, users can send email to a single recipient or broadcast it to multiple users. Email is sent to a simulated mailbox in the network mail server or host computer until it is examined and deleted.

The email client on your computer queries the mail server every so many minutes and alerts you if new email has arrived.

An email client is a computer program that is used to read and send email. Protocols supported by email clients include POP3 and IMAP.

The most common email client's are Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express.

You can block an email using spam filters. We allow you to set up filters on your inbox, for example; if you are constantly bombarded by a certain address, you can block the emails you recieve from the email address, or even the domain (@thedomain.com).

Email forwarding allows you to set up email addresses that appear to be seperate but are actually delivered to another account. This is useful for setting up accounts such as "sales@yourdomain.com" and "info@yourdomain.com" while only needing 1 account to check them all.

To encrypt means to to alter a file using a secret code so as to be unintelligible to unauthorised parties. Once a file has been encrypted, it is impossible for it to be read unless you have access to the decryption key.

The File Manager allows you to manage your site through HTML, rather than an FTP tool or other third-party application. You can upload, create or delete files, organize files in folders, and change file permissions. While not as sophisticated as most FTP tools, File Manager is free and gives you all the basic functionality necessary to manage your site.

The primary method for keeping a computer secure from intruders. A firewall allows or blocks traffic into and out of a private network or the user's computer. Firewalls are widely used to give users secure access to the Internet as well as to separate a company's public Web server from its internal network.

Frontpage Extensions allow you to publish your web site using Microsoft Frontpage. These extensions can occasionally become corrupted, so you can uninstall and then reinstall Frontpage Extensions whenever required.

A standard way for computers on the Internet to exchange files. Like HTTP, FTP programs use the TCP/IP protocols on which the Internet is based to manage the transmission of binary files from one place to another.

FTP accounts allow you to have multiple users connecting to FTP (using different usernames and passwords). We limit the amount of accounts, depending on your package.

A gigabytes is 1,073,741,824 bytes of data. It is usually abbreviated as GB as in "My new hard drive is 80GB". Sometimes people will refer to gigabytes as "Gigs".

Hotlinking, or leeching is when another web site owner links directly to one or more of your images or multimedia files and includes it on their web page. Not only is this theft of your intellectual property, you are paying for the bandwidth used by that site.

HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language, the most common laguage for creating web pages. HTML defines the structure and layout of a web page by using a variety of tags and attributes.

IP stands for Internet Protocol. The address of a particular computer on the Internet, used to identify it uniquely for communications purposes. Every computer that sends or receives information on the Internet must have an IP address, expressed as a 32-bit number, which is attached to every message has a return address to which it can reply if necessary. This is especially important on the Web, where a server must know exactly where to send back a requested page.

ISP stands for Internet Service Provider. An ISP is usually a company that provides access to the Internet for a montly fee.

The Java Servlet API allows a software developer to add dynamic content to a web server using the Java platform. The generated content is commonly HTML, but may be other data such as XML. Servlets are the Java counterpart to dynamic web content technologies such as CGI or PHP.

Java Servlets are extremely powerful and are used to power sites such as Ebay and Amazon.

A programming language designed to enhance the capabilities of Web pages. The brainchild of Netscape, Javascript is a relative of c++ but is designed for completely different tasks and is much easier to learn. It should not be confused with Java. Its main purpose is to help a Web Browser do things that are beyond the scope of pure HTML, such as popping up special windows in response to mouse clicks or displaying messages in its status bar.

Developed by Sun, JavaServer Pages (JSP) are normal HTML pages with Java code embedded in them. A JSP compiler is used to generate a Servlet from the JSP page.

JSP pages are typically given the file name suffix of ".jsp".

A Kilobyte is 1,024 bytes of data. Usually it is abbreviated as KB but sometimes simply K as in "My website uses 500K of space".

A system that allows users to send e-mail to one address, whereupon their message is copied and sent to all of the other subscribers of the mailing list.

A megabyte is 1,048,576 bytes of data. It is usually abbreviated as MB as in "I used 500MB of bandwidth this month". Sometimes people will refer to megabytes as "Megs".

MySQL is a relational database system. It is designed for speed, power and precision in mission critical, heavy load use. To learn more about MySQL please visit http://www.mysql.com.

To run database orientated scripts you need a database management system. MySQL is one of the most powerful around. All packages come with MySQL databases, the amount you are limited to depends on the package. You can have as many tables in a database as you wish.

You can protect directories within your site from browsers by using a password to protect them. This allows you to restrict material to only authorized users or store sensitive material online. This has the same appearance and effect as the password protection on CPanel.

Perl is a general-purpose programming language invented in 1987 by Larry Wall. With over one million users worldwide, it has become a popular language of choice for World Wide Web development.

PHP or Hypertext Preprocessor is a server side, HTML embedded scripting language that is used primarily on Linux Web servers to create dynamic Web pages. PHP script is enclosed within special PHP tags. An HTML page that includes a PHP script is typically given a file name suffix of ".php" ".php3," or ".phtml". It is extremely fast and powerful and is very similar in structure to the language C. A great place to start when learning about PHP is http://www.php.net.

A platform, in hosting terms, determines what the operating system is. The two main platforms are; Unix and Windows. Our servers use the Unix platform, which is the more popular and stable platform of the two.

Users can retrieve e-mail directly from POP3 mailboxes on the mail server to the computer using an email program such as Eudora or Outlook.

The latest version of the Post Office Protocol, a standard for retrieving E-mail. (see POP)

Also called a proxy, it is a computer system or router that breaks the connection between sender and receiver.

Functioning as a relay between client and server, proxy servers are used to help prevent an attacker from invading the private network. Proxies are one of several tools used to build a firewall.

By using special HTML code or scripting code in a Web page, one can redirect the visitor seamlessly to another Web page or even another site.

The Resource Meter option, in the control panel, provides a detailed view of disk space and data transfer statistics.

The load of a server depends on how many users are running on the same 'hard drive' at once. CJ Website Hosting keeps the amount of uses on a server very low (which explains our high disk and bandwidth allowances!). Having a low server load allows us to maintain our high speed hosting and 99.9% uptime.

Server Side means that the code/script/program executes on the server. Examples of server-side scripts are PHP, CGI and Perl. Non-server-side scripting languages (or client side as they are also known) include JavaScript and VBScript.

Shared Hosting allows you to host your website using your own domain name, on a server you share with other users who will also share the server's resources.

In website terms, a shopping cart is a metaphorical storage space for the items you wish to purchase from an e-commerce site. CJ Website Hosting offers two built in shopping carts, which you can easily install via the Control panel.

Stands for Simple Mail Transport Protocol. The standard way of transferring email from one computer to another on the Internet. You generally use the SMTP server of your internet provider to send email.

Junk e-mail. Sending the same unrequested file/commercial e-mail to many people.

Someone who sends spam to people or newsgroups.

SSI, or Server Side Includes, are a set of variable values that a server can include in an HTML file before it sends it to the browser. SSI are often used to insert common content into several different web pages. PHP also has a set of server side variables that you can include.

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is a protocol designed to allow encrypted, authenticated communications across the Internet. SSL is included as part of both the Microsoft and Netscape browsers and most Web server products. Developed by Netscape, SSL also gained the support of Microsoft and other Internet client/server developers as well and became the de facto standard until evolving into Transport Layer Security.

Subdomain is a "domain within a domain". Subdomains are individual web addresses built upon a pre-existing domain name, for example, http://mysubdomain.cj-hosting.com.

Protocols which enable different networks to work together on the Internet in such functions as file transfers, remote logins and e-mail. It is useful to think of TCP/IP as a kind of electronic removals outfit, which is used to ship data from one physical place to another.

Unix or Linux hosting defines the services of housing, serving, and maintaining files for one or more Web sites on Unix or Linux web server at high speed Internet connection.

Uptime is the percentage of time that a web site is working. For example, an uptime average of 99.99%, means that your site will be down for a total about 1 hour each month. Usually, the downtime happens between 12-midnight and 2am local time.

To transfer information from a local computer to a remote one, such as a Web server, across a network or modem connection. FTP can be used to upload your files to your webspace.

UPS, in computer terms, stands for Uninterruptible Power Supply. In a data centre, UPS power means that all power is fed through a battery of sorts. In the event of a power failure, the UPS will continue to feed power to the network and servers while data centre staff correct the problem or start up alternative power sources such as diesel generators. Having an Uninterruptible Power Supply in place helps to ensure maximum uptime.

To paraphrase the World Wide Web Consortium, Internet space is inhabited by many points of content. A URI (Uniform Resource Identifier) is the way you identify any of those points of content. The most common form of URI is the Web page address, which is a particular form or subset of URI called a URL.

A Uniform Resource Locator is the address that is entered in your web browser to arrive at a particular web page, for example; entering the URL http://www.google.com into your browsers address bar (and clicking Go) will take you to Google's homepage.

Virtual Hosting allows you to host your website using your own domain name, on a server you share with other users who will also share the server's resources.

Hosting, also known as Web site hosting or Web hosting is the business of housing, serving, and maintaining files for one or more Web sites on web servers with very fast Internet connections.

The Web / FTP Statistics area presents you with a wide variety of information about your web site, from the latest visitors to a detailed monthly summary of hits, as well as providing an error log. Use the Statistics tools to keep track of what pages are being visited most often, and where they are being referred from.

CJ Website Hosting offer webmail - allowing you to read, reply and forward your emails online (just as you would in Outlook express!). Webmail requires you to log in securely to view your emails - which are popped from the server for you.

A website, web site, webpage or web page is a virtual location on the World Wide Web, identified by a Website address such as http://www.cj-hosting.com.

Whois means "Who is...?". Whois is an Internet service that finds information about a domain name or IP address. If you enter a domain name in a Whois search engine, it will scour a huge database of domains and return information about the one you entered. This information typically contains the name, address, and phone number of the administrative and technical contacts of the domain name. WHOIS can also be used to simply check if a certain domain name is available or if it has already been registered.
